“He, great in counsel, prepared for me ways for setting forth, And I found His name in my heart a sustainment. Therefore I bow down to Him at every stage; And at every step I thank Him.”

—Yehudah ha-Levi

My Soul Longed for the Place of Assembly at the Beginning of My Journey
A poem by Yehudah ha-Levi

On that day when my soul longed for the place of assembly,
I found nevertheless that a dread of departure seized a hold of me.
He, great in counsel, prepared for me ways for setting forth,
And I found His name in my heart a sustainment.
Therefore I bow down to Him at every stage;
And at every step I thank Him.

Yehuda Ha-Levi ((lived c. 1080-1141) was one of the greatest Spanish--Sephardi-- Jewish poets. He was a prolific writer of both Arabic and Hebrew poetry. He was also a physician and a philosopher.)
