Altaf Husain holds a doctoral degree from the Howard University School of Social Work in Washington D.C. His research interests include the integration of immigrant and refugee families, and especially Muslim adolescents, in the United States. He is a double alumnus of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, having earned his B.Sc. in biomedical engineering and his M.Sc. in Social Work. Altaf is a former two-term national president of the Muslim Students Association, a current executive committee member of the Muslim Alliance in North America, a faculty member of COMPASS, the state of the art management training program of MSA National, and a board member of the Islamic Society of North America and the Peaceful Families Project.

Professor Kavakci is a former member of the Turkish Parliament. She holds a Ph.D in political science from Howard University, an MPA from Harvard University and a B.S. in software engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas. Her areas of expertise are the democratization of the Muslim world, contemporary Turkish politics, women in Islam, and Muslim women in politics.


Dr. Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im (from Sudan) is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of Law at Emory Law. An internationally recognized scholar of Islam and human rights and human rights in cross-cultural perspectives, Professor An-Na'im teaches courses in international law, human rights and Islamic law. His research interests include constitutionalism in Islamic and African countries, and Islam and politics.

Daniel Moore was born in 1940 in Oakland, California, his first two books of poems, Dawn Visions (1964) and Burnt Heart, Ode to the War Dead (1972) were published by Lawrence Ferlinghetti of City Lights Books, San Francisco. He was the winner of the Ina Coolbrith Award for poetry and the James D. Phelan Award. From 1966 to 1969, Mr. Moore wrote and directed ritual theatre for his Floating Lotus Magic Opera Company in Berkeley, California.

When he became a Muslim in 1970, he took the name Abd al-Hayy, and began traveling extensively in Europe and North Africa. In Philadelphia, since 1990, he published the Ramadan Sonnets (1994) and The Blind Beekeeper (2002). Moore has been the major editor for a number of works, including The Burdah of Shaikh Busiri, translated by Hamza Yusuf, and the poetry of Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish, translated by Munir Akash. He is widely published both in magazines and on the net. Daniel Moore's poems (sometimes under the name Abd al-Hayy Moore) have appeared in such magazines as Zyzzva, the City Lights Review, and The Nation.



Dr. Huda Totonji has a PhD degree in Fine Art from Ireland. Her PhD dissertation explored the integration of text and image researching Islamic Calligraphy, Female Subjectivity, and Art and Science. She taught at Dar Al Hekma College in Jeddah and she currently teaches at the Art Institute of Washington. Dr. Totonji’s artwork investigates issues and questions about femininity and visual representation. Having travelled to twenty seven countries around the world, along with her academic and professional experience from the Middle East and the West has contributed to her ability to communicate with different age groups, faiths, and nationalities. She worked collaboratively with a Japanese American Artist on a permanent public artwork entitled “Money Tree” in Portland Oregon. Dr. Huda was also selected among the 300 Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow from 75 countries, at the Muslim Leaders of Tomorrow 2009 Conference in Doha, Qatar. As a well renowned international Muslim female artist, she exhibited her work internationally in the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Jordan, England and Japan. As a Saudi female Artist, she participated in more than 60 exhibitions. She also had her work featured in the critically acclaimed PBS documentary entitled, “Mohammed, Legacy of the Prophet.” Most recently, her artwork was exhibited in the United Nations in NY and in Johns Hopkins University.
