Jesuit Heritage Week Celebrates its 15th Year
On Sunday evening our community will gather in Gaston Hall for the Opening Mass of Jesuit Heritage Week, an annual tradition on the main campus with roots tracing back 15 years. In 2000, two undergraduates focused their creativity and planning skills on doing something tangible to bring the campus community together to share “in the spirit and mission that makes Georgetown unique.” Their thinking was that JHW would be similar to Georgetown Day but more expansive and with a special focus on the Jesuit character and history of the oldest Catholic and Jesuit university in the country.
Since its founding, Jesuit Heritage Week has been a student-led undertaking with an emphasis on activities and events offering students chances to interact with Jesuits outside the classroom. Highlighting the work of the Jesuits in the world and on the Hilltop, Jesuit Heritage Week offers opportunities for our community to learn, reflect and celebrate together. The world has changed significantly since 2000 when our current seniors were just beginning their educational journeys in elementary school. One thing that has not changed, however, is the love, respect and gratitude our community offers the Georgetown Jesuits.

The Hindu Students Association and Chaplain Pratima Dharm welcome Fr. Greg Schenden, SJ, and the campus community to their weekly worship gathering.
Opening Mass – 8:00 p.m. in Gaston Hall
Join the Georgetown Jesuit Community for Sunday Mass featuring the Chapel, Contemporary and Gospel choirs. The campus community is invited to join this festive University celebration that takes the place of Dahlgren Masses (7:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 11:00 pm) and Protestant services in St. William’s Chapel (4:30 pm, 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm.) The Cristo Rey Story: Fr. John Foley, SJ and the Georgetown Cristo Rey Community – 6:00 p.m. in Copley Formal Lounge
In Chicago in 1996, the first Cristo Rey Jesuit High School opened, sparking a revolution in urban Catholic education. With its local business partnership model and work-study format, Cristo Rey Jesuit opened doors to high quality college preparatory education, professional workforce skills training, and valuable networks of contacts for a generation of young people from economically challenged families. Fr. John Foley, SJ, founder and first president of the Cristo Rey Network, is joined by students who attended Cristo Rey schools for conversation about this Jesuit innovation in Catholic secondary education. From Ignatius to Arrupe to Francis: a Jesuit Leadership Continuum – 4:00 p.m. in Dahlgren Chapel
In conjunction with the publication of his latest book, The Jesuits: A History from Ignatius to the Present (Rowman & Littlefield, 2014) Fr. John O’Malley, SJ, University Professor in the Theology department, offers perspectives on the personal and public lives of these historic Jesuit leaders. Copies of Fr. O’Malley’s latest book will be available for purchase after the lecture. All are welcome!

Hoya Half-Time Entertainment – 7:00 p.m. at the Verizon Center
Georgetown Hoyas take on the Xavier Musketeers. Though we will compete on the court, Xavier and Georgetown are unified by our shared Catholic and Jesuit mission to encourage students to seek God in all things, be men and women for others, and promote academic excellence. Women and the Ignatian Charism – 3:30 p.m. in Makóm, Leavey Center
From its founding by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Society of Jesus has relied on women to assist in their ministry. In the last few decades, this relationship has deepened into a partnership that has enlivened Jesuit works like Georgetown. Much has been accomplished though more needs to be done. Join Dr. Jeanne Lord, Prof. Marilyn McMorrow, RSCJ, Shiva Subbaraman, and Prof. Ilia Delio, OSF, for coffee and conversation as they share insights drawn from experience as leaders in Jesuit education and religious organizations. Musica Jesuitica, Part 1 – 7:00 p.m. in Copley Formal Lounge
Renowned musicologist, Fr. Piotr Nawrot will present music from the 17th and 18th century archives in Bolivia, composed in honor of Saint Ignatius. He will also refer to music with texts in Indian languages – in particularly his latest research on music from the Jesuit missions among the Guarani Indians. Dr. Nawrot will also discuss his reconstruction of the manuscripts and the presentation of this music by contemporary Indian musicians from the Bolivian rainforest zone. Co-sponsored with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Department of Performing Arts. All are welcome!
Spike-a-Jesuit – 9:00 p.m. at the Volleyball Courts in Yates Field House

Musica Jesuitica, Part 2 – 1:15 p.m. in Dahlgren Chapel
17th and 18th century poetry and music in America often referred to Saint Ignatius, describing his virtues, wisdom and sanctity as model for Hispanic and Indian society in the New World. The Saint’s protection, intercession and power were meant to lead Spaniards and Indians to fight against sin and wrongdoing. The program was created by Fr. Piotr Nawrot, to commemorate the restitution of the Society of Jesus in 1814 and represents the North American premiere of this music. Co-sponsored with the Department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Department of Performing Arts. All are welcome!
