Winter Break: Five Day Silent Retreat
Breathtaking. After a night of steady snow, the view that we saw from the Calcagnini Contemplative Center, Georgetown’s new retreat center, was astounding. At the beginning of January, 16 retreatants welcomed in the new year by participating on the Five-Day Ignatian Retreat. The retreatants included Georgetown students, alumni and staff.
As the Assistant Director of Ignatian Retreats, I’ve had the opportunity to walk with retreatants during three Five-Day retreats. This week, however, was my first Five-Day retreat at the Contemplative Center. Located in the hills of Bluemont, VA, the center provided a beautiful and inviting environment in which everyone could rest, reflect and pray.
I am always struck by the number of alumni from across the nation who participate in our Ignatian retreats. Alumni who graduated anywhere from five years to 50 years ago! No matter how long they’ve been away from the Hilltop, alumni can engage with the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola through these retreats. Many alumni have shared with me the profound impact that the retreats have on their daily lives.
An alumna of the College myself, I am grateful to know that no matter where God takes me, I can always return home to Georgetown’s second hilltop. At the Calcagnini Contemplative Center, I will find the space to slow down and reconnect with what matters most.
