A Message From Campus Ministry on President DeGioia’s Recent Announcement

Dear Georgetown Campus Ministry Communities,

In light of President DeGioia’s recent announcement , I want to acknowledge and share with you in this moment of uncertainty and disquiet. We realize the upsetting disruption this is for many; we all cherish our shared Georgetown life, community, and experiences. The University makes this decision with an eye toward the greater good.

I recall a pivotal moment in St. Ignatius of Loyola’s own journey. Having sustained serious injury at the Battle of Pamplona, Ignatius returned home to Loyola Castle, apprehensive and uncertain about his own future. His recovery would be characterized by struggle, loss, discernment, and unforeseen possibilities. In this journey of both desolation and consolation, Ignatius recognized that he was not alone – God was always with him. Let us remember none of us walks this journey alone.

Campus Ministry stands ready to accompany all students throughout this journey. Chaplains and Residential Ministers will be available remotely, and there will be a chaplain on campus daily in Healy Hall. Masses and religious services will be live-streamed as much as possible, and sustainable programs will be moved to online formats. Further information will be sent out through individual chaplaincy emails and Campus Ministry Facebook  and Instagram accounts.

With confidence in our shared Georgetown values, let us proceed together in a spirit of generosity, solidarity, and magnanimity. In whatever tradition you may pray, please join us in lifting up those around the globe who have been affected by this crisis.

In Peace,

Rev. Gregory Schenden, SJ
Director of Campus Ministry
