Announcing Dr. Amy Uelmen as Director for Mission & Ministry at the Law Center

Dear Georgetown Community Members:

It is with great pleasure that we announce the appointment of Dr. Amy Uelmen to the newly created position of Director for Mission & Ministry at the Georgetown University Law Center, effective August 1, 2021.

In close collaboration with chaplains and staff colleagues of various religious traditions, Dr. Uelmen will work to advance, support, and integrate the work of Mission & Ministry and Campus Ministry throughout the Law Center.

As we return to campus in the wake of the pandemic and the social and cultural tensions of the past several months, we also pause to acknowledge the need to seek meaning in what we have experienced and to support efforts to build a deeper sense of connection.  In bringing together our resources for mission and ministry, we hope to support ample space for the kind of reflection that helps to generate meaning and hope, and that enables us to build a stronger sense of community throughout the campus.

Dr. Uelmen brings to this work deep knowledge of the Georgetown community.  A triple Hoya (C’90, L’93, L’16), she completed her doctoral studies with a tort law thesis on the legal and moral obligations of bystanders to an act of violence.  She also holds a Master of Arts in Theology from Fordham University.  Her long experience in legal education includes directing Fordham’s Institute on Religion, Law & Lawyer’s Work (2001 – 2011), and since returning to Georgetown in 2011, serving as a Lecturer and Special Advisor to the Dean at Georgetown Law and a Senior Research Fellow at the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs.

A longtime member of the Focolare community, Dr. Uelmen’s grassroots community work has focused on interreligious dialogue, projects for economic justice, and workshops to heal cultural and political polarization.  Known at the Law Center for her seminars on the intersection of religious values and professional life and on methods for dialogue across deep differences, she will continue to teach in this area, and hopes to expand the array of opportunities to develop these reflective practices and communication tools.
