Georgetown University Gospel Choir

Have you heard about “DC’s best kept secret?” The Georgetown University Gospel Choir has flourished in the last few years under the direction of Stellar Award Winner Phillip Carter and is quickly gaining acclaim and recognition around the DC area. After years of packing St. William Chapel to the point of standing room only, the Georgetown University Gospel Choir relocated their Spring Spiritual Service of Song to the MSB’s Lohrfink Auditorium — with overwhelming success. Over 400 people sang, danced, and praised along with the talented vocalists and musicians during the two hour concert on April 6, 2014.

The Gospel Choir operates as a group of about 35 students under the Protestant Chaplaincy in the Office of Campus Ministry, but it reaches beyond the boundaries of faith to include singers of various religions and backgrounds. “The most beautiful part about music is its uniting factor that soars above barriers,” said Taylor Griffin, COL’14. “Gospel Choir unites people from all walks of life, creating a family as we lift our voice to praise God together.” The Gospel Choir also serves as the epicenter of the Gospel Worship Service, which takes place every Sunday at 5:30 PM during the academic year in St. William Chapel and holds a reputation as a spiritual haven, as well as family, for students. Michelle Hernandez, COL’14, not only sang in the Gospel Choir for all four years, but served as its Vice President and liaison with the Protestant Chaplaincy. “Music is a universal language,” said Michelle. “You don’t have to know the words to a song to understand–it’s beyond words. If a musician knows what he/she is doing, then they can move you with their voice alone.” And when this choir sings, the audience cannot help but move!

Weekly rehearsals take place on Thursday evenings at 7:30 PM in St. William Chapel. Concerts for the 2014-2015 year will take place on November 23, 2014 at 5 PM in St. William Chapel and April 19, 2015 at 5 PM in Gaston Hall. All are open to the public.
